I never reeaaally thought I’d be in this position of being out of shape. Well, this out of shape. I have been active most of my life; danced, played soccer, rode bikes, swam, volleyball, ran, played outside, track, all growing up. I was a three sport athlete in high school. Then in college I was on the track and field team. Worked out upwards 5-6 hours a day (I liked to call it my half credit class that took up half my life) and yes, recovery time is included and it wasn’t that much year round, even if it felt like it. :)
Fast forward to today; I have a 3 month old and a 2 year old. I started both pregnancies out at the same weight- the heaviest and most out of shape I had ever been- I had been within 10 pounds of that but I had a lot more muscle back then ;) I gained 50 lbs with the first, barely lost it by the time I got pregnant with the 2nd. The 2nd pregnancy was soo different, I didn’t gain as much weight, but I also had the baby 3 weeks earlier than I did the 1st. Even though I started my pregnancy by working out fairly regularly, by the end I was on track to gain 50 lbs again. BLAH.
Let’s take a little trip down memory lane….
After the 1st baby I knew I had to actively change some things in my life, not just think about them. I had been out of shape before but that was summer out of shape and I had a sport team every fall helping me get back in shape. I remembered how hard that was, so why? oh why? did I let myself get so out of shape?!? AGAIN?? (let’s be honest here: it’s easy!)
I learned to stop dwelling on what I should have/could have done and got moving! It was a long and slow process but I got rid of my 50 pounds of “baby” weight just in time to get pregnant with #2. Not quite where I wanted to be, but I knew I had made changes and I was committed to keeping those changes. (of course with a few bumps in the road)
Then, Que the bumps. The pregnancy took over. I started contracting quite a bit around 30ish weeks. So I stopped working out. Baby was born in August and I have been trying to get into my groove again. It has been a slow process with 2 kids 2 and under and a body that wants more rest than my head wants it to have. Baby steps. That’s how I’m taking it.
I joined a health challenge when my baby was 6 weeks old and successfully lost 6% of my body weight just through changing my eating and drinking habits (as in more water people!) the other habits like sleep and exercise, well they don’t happen when you have a newborn. I’m looking forward to getting in a regular workout routine starting in December… I’ll keep ya’ll posted on that. :)
